Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk

Invisible Monsters : ★★★★★

I heard a lot about this book, especially as the one that Palahniuk’s editor didn’t want to publish because they find it too disturbing. The story is about a model who knew fame and glory until she’s been disfigured during a tragic accident. It follows her journey of being an invisible monster, so hideous that everyone prefers to ignore her existence. After reading it, I have to admit : this book is my favourite from Chuck Palahniuk. I’m a huge fan of his writing and PARTICULARLY his plot twisting.

This book is a real masterwork , from it’s original magazine structure, bouncing the lines all over the place  to a deep critic of the society’s norms for beauty.
It’s also about redefining oneself. Using plastic surgery as the whole book’s concept, Chuck dissects the ugliest part of an individual’s identity. One by one, each character is as weird and unique as the other but they all have one thing in common: identity crisis. They all come to the conclusion of doing an ultimatum to reborn, to become someone else.

“The only way to find true happiness is to risk being completely cut open.”
Chuck Palahniuk, Invisible Monsters

Thoughout the book, I was disturbed, confused and also excited. Questions were filling my mind: Who am I? Who is who? Who did what? And it all made sense in the end. As I mentioned before, there’s no clear continuous storytelling in this novel. Jump to this , Jump to that. You will be disconcerted and that is exactly what he wanted to do. The finest  approach to keep crucial information out of the view, hidden. In my opinion, it was a genius idea because it plays with our minds and it makes us want to come back for more. And if you want to experience for yourself, you can get a copy of Invisible Monsters through this hyperlink !
