The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert| Blog Tour

I was booked on Blog Tours in January and this book will be the last event for this month ! 😀 It was so much fun and honestly I will gladly do more blog tours like this 🙂

Alice’s grandmother, Althea, is a renowned author who wrote The Tales of Hinterland. For all her life, Alice stayed away from that book because her mom forbid her to read it. But when her grandma died in her estate The Hazel Wood and her Mom went missing, Alice had to pair up with Ellery, a fan of The Tales, to find the clues in those tales and discover what’s lie in The Hazel Wood.

Imagine Alice Adventures In Wonderland following the steps of The Tales Of The Peculiar to find Miss Pilgrim.

  The Prose: It’s beautifully written. If you’re the kind of person who’s amazed at how people construct their sentences you’ll be blown away by her writing style. Elegant and yet familiar.

• The Concept : I love retellings but I admire the author to take it to another level. The thoughts of setting off the base on a book of fairytales and the characters have to find a logic in one of the most abstract worlds.
• The Tales : Honestly… I NEED THAT BOOK THEY MENTIONED ?! The stories seem so frkn**n good and dark. If I were Alice and have a badass grandmother as a fairytale storyteller I’d be asking for a special signed copy. #LIKE WHAT ARE U DOING WITH UR LIFE ALICE

• 

  The Slow Pace: The Introduction is pretty cool to read but when it lasts half of the novel it’s…😴 hum hard to follow. It can take a while for the story to fall through and they mostly spend their times in New York running around searching for clues. I was wishing to have more time in the Hazel Wood world.

• The Clues: I always loved intellectual challenges but when the characters find all the answers because duh-it’s-how-it-is and there are no deductions or whatsoever, it’s a real letdown.

Overall

The characters were enjoyable but not noticeable. I love Alice at the beginning but she didn’t outshine as a character. It’s not bad per se it’s just that it’s okay feeling. If you’re looking for some light retelling I would recommend this one ! The Tales are haunting and the beautiful writing make this book a page turner.

Q: What is your most anticipated book of 2018 and why?

A: First I’m going to cheat and talk up the three best 2018 books I’ve already read: The Cruel Prince, by Holly Black, is brilliant crafted and deadly dark, with crazy satisfying character-driven twists and beautiful magic undercut by a cruel and sickly fey world. The Strange Fascinations of Noah Hypnotik, by David Arnold, is so weird and singular and brainy and fun, with an ending that devastates. The Astonishing Color of After, by Emily X. R. Pan, is just completely gorgeous and weird magical realism, with food writing that had me dying to get to a Taiwanese night market.

As for books I haven’t read yet, I, along with everyone else, am longing to get my hands on Angie Thomas’s On the Come Up, and while there’s no telling whether it’ll come this year or next, I sure need to read Laini Taylor’s Muse of Nightmares as soon as humanly possible. And I’m thrilled to report that I’ll be getting my hand on Stephanie Garber’s Caraval sequel, Legendary, any second now, and I’m sooo excited.
