A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E Schwab

Okay so, I’ve been meaning to review this book for like over a year now LOL and now that we are all in quarantine, I finally remember to review it ! Yay Me 🙂 V.E Schwab has litterally put together all of the best YA fantasy features in a book. This series remind me a lot of Shadow and Bone, The Young Elites and Red Queen series.

5 things I love about this book:

— The Parallel Worlds of London : Red London, White London and Grey London. The choice of putting a color over each London is a genius move to illustrate the clashing philosophies of each territory and their view about the magical world.

As much as the different Londons has their own philosophies and particular smells and flavors, so are the characters residing in each of them. Their fate will be entertwined with each other and the journey will make us hate and love them at the same time.

There’s pratically no romance in this book, my hypothesis is it’s a slow burning kind of love and I’m really happy for it because rushing into a romantic relationship is what turned me off in a YA book (Yes it’s been over a year and I haven’t read the sequels yet LMAO).

The action never stops, everything is felt so intensely while reading this book. We discover the magic and what it can do with the characters and although we think we know more than them, there’s always place for more surprises.

The final reason I love this book resides in every book that V.E Schwab has ever written and that is her prose. She has a way with words that can adapt throughout different demograhic, different genres and she completely compelled me with this book.

I think I am one of the few people who does not absolutely adore this series. I like it quite a lot, but my heart (when it comes to Schwab) belongs to the Monster of Verity duology haha I think while I loved the different Londons and really well constructed characters (with a special weak spot for Holland), I just didn’t love the pacing or how I didn’t feel like I could connect in the beginning. The third book was my favourite though, so you have some good stuff ahead of you!

I loved this trilogy for all the reasons you’ve written about but also because I have a soft sport for rogues and Lila is such a fun and amoral character.

I didn’t really enjoy this book, but I loved the rest of the series! I love the world building too, but the characters got really developed as the series goes on and I think it’s why I enjoyed it so much more later on 🙂
