Reading Nightbitch is like drinking cocktails over the night, the first sip is always the greatest (of course if you had a good bartender) and then slowly but surely, after 3-4 cocktails you start to requestion if this was a good idea. By the end of the night, your body has taken on so much alcohol that you are just getting nauseous. That was the whole ride of this book for me.
It started with a good premise (a good laugh even), I was so sure I was going to enjoy it but then, things got weird. Don’t get me wrong, I like weirdness in books but I also like to be entertained. This is one of the rare books that delivers weirdness without any.. meat. For a book talking in such a carnal language, the lack of meat and substance is disturbing. It fell flat. About 1/4 pages in, things started to get repetitive and I was telling myself, how did that happen? This is such a good premise, a mother slowly transforms into a dog but it’s redundant and boring? There’s definitely the motherhood that may be approached in a different angle that I cannot relate to it. I found her husband, kid and herself to be also poorly developed and that might contribute to the boring aspect of the book.
At first, the dynamic between the mother and the husband was intriguing, you don’t quite know if the Dad knows about her metamorphosis but then I just blanked, I didn’t care anymore if I wanted him to know. I just wanted to finish this book and jump to the next one. The book also focuses on this particular aspect of body horror, wanting to make it look suspenseful, but that did not work for me at all. I was yawning while reading about the particular scenes. Maybe the writing on this one was not for me, and the overuse of commas was annoying.
Nonetheless, the novel has that weird surrealism where it gives the power to motherhood and weaves a delicate relationship between mental health, motherhood depression but also transformation. I do think it’s creative and a very original way to see the metamorphosis as a liberating power giving back to the mother.
