Love blossoms between a young woman, Maren ,on the margins of society and a disenfranchised drifter, Lee, as they embark on a 3,000-mile odyssey through the backroads of America. Movie plot
One of the most anticipated movie of this year from the same director that brought you Call Me By Your Name ! Thanks to Warner Bros Canada, I had the chance to read the book before the advance screening and I absolutely loved the whole experience. I’m your typical bookworm who believes the books are better than the movies, but on some occasions the movie is just as good. And what I find in those movies, is that the director would add his own touch or changes some aspects that actually makes sense. And that’s the case of this movie Bones And All.
While I absolutely loved the book for its rawness, prose, it’s definitely not a smooth read. If you can read the book before the movie, go ahead. Because the whole fun is to dive right in without knowing anything about it. So if you want to stop reading my review now and go read it, please do it. If you’re reading the next lines, you might get some spoilers.
The movie featuring Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell was phenomenal. Most of the movie is very similar to the book so that’s why I don’t think there’s a need to read the book AFTER you saw the movie. It’s a coming-of-age movie, a bloody romance and a little suspense here and there but all the horror is still very soft. You never really see the actual events of horror acts. I feel like the director really wanted the focus to be on the budding romance, the choice of deciding who you want to be and that’s enough. Taylor Russell’s acting was exceptional and outstanding. I just wished her character, Maren, was more pro-active in the movie, like she was in the book. In the movie, she doesn’t seem to take much action or take responsibility and pretty much let her side characters make the decisions.
The soundtrack was beautiful and do pay attention to that little piano note, as it indicates you some important scenes transitions about the character. I also thought the ending in the movie was original, the director gave a “justification” to the tragic ending of the book. Sully, in the movie was also very different from the book in my opinion. But it worked. Sully in the movie was creepier, for sure, and Mark Rylance does an amazing job at it. I like how the movie completely did not address one of the biggest plot twist of the book about Sully’s character haha but that’s okay I guess if the focus was solely on the romance of Maren and Lee.
