More like the ruin of me. This book is a disappointing read that fails to deliver on its promise of exploring the history of Warhammer 40,000’s Chaos Space Marines.
Before I continue, I have to say however, for someone who didn’t play the game League of Legend, it’s a story that you could read without being a gamer and without any formal knowledge of the world building.
The book is a convoluted mess that jumps haphazardly between different characters and time periods, leaving the reader confused and disoriented. Reynolds’ writing is clunky and overwrought, with awkward sentence structures and an excessive use of adjectives that feels forced and artificial.
One of the major flaws of Ruination is its portrayal of the characters. Rather than presenting complex and nuanced figures, Reynolds reduces them to one-dimensional caricatures with little depth or development. The villains are cartoonishly evil, with no redeeming qualities or understandable motivations, while the heroes are bland and forgettable, lacking any real personality or distinguishing characteristics.
The book’s battle scenes are similarly lackluster, with the author relying on tired cliches and tired tropes rather than presenting anything new or interesting. The fights are formulaic and predictable, with little sense of danger or suspense. The descriptions are overlong and repetitive, with Reynolds seemingly more interested in showing off his knowledge of Warhammer 40,000’s lore than in crafting a compelling narrative.
Another major issue with this book is its pace. It’s such a slow beginning until the action got up again near the end. I was expecting something like Arcane pace and I guess it was a too high of expectation.
Overall, Ruination is a poorly written and unengaging book that fails to live up to its potential. The characters are one-dimensional, the battles are uninspired, and the themes are handled in a heavy-handed and simplistic way. For fans of League of Legends or epic fantasy and science fiction, there are far better books out there than this tedious and forgettable tome.
